What is Volumetric Weight?
Airlines charge for air cargo based on either the actual weight or the volumetric (dimensional) weight of the shipment, whichever is greater. This is because large but light packages take up space in the aircraft that could otherwise hold heavier, denser cargo.
The Formula
For international air freight, the standard formula is:
Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ 5,000
Example Calculation
You have a box that is 60cm × 50cm × 40cm and weighs 8kg actual weight.
- Volumetric weight = (60 × 50 × 40) ÷ 5,000 = 120,000 ÷ 5,000 = 24 kg
- You will be charged for 24 kg (the higher of 8 and 24)
